Death Race 2050 Movie Breakdown [VID]

Manu Bennett, Marci Miller, and Malcolm McDowell feature in the political satire and action picture Death Race 2050, which was released in the United States in 2017 and was directed by G.J. Echternkamp. It is a continuation of the film Death Race 2000, which was released in 1975. Roger Corman, who was responsible for the production of both movies, referred to the second one first post as "a car-racing picture with some dark comedy."

What precisely is the story behind Death Race 2050?

2050 is the year. The Death Race serves as both entertainment and population control in the United Corporations of America, which is beset by overpopulation and has a 99.993 percent unemployment rate. The latest Death Race includes incumbent champion Frankenstein and spans from Old New York to New Los Angeles. Against Frankenstein, genetically created athletes Jed Perfectus, Minerva Jefferson, Tammy the Terrorist, and the villainous, black, artificially intelligent, self-driving automobile ABE contend. Each driver has a proxy, a broadcaster who gives the viewers a virtual reality experience of the race. Frankenstein is instantly put off by his proxy, Annie Sullivan, and dismisses both her efforts to interrogate him and her advice to let his opponents pass him.

During the time when the drivers are racing around the East Coast, a group of rebels headed by Alexis Hamilton, a former network producer, have erected traps throughout the area. When Tammy and Minerva abduct members of the other's cult with the purpose of killing them, a heated competition ensues between the two of them. The artificial intelligence known as ABE suffers a malfunction, which results in the death of its proxy, and then gives up the pursuit of figuring out its ultimate goal in life. At the first checkpoint, Hamilton gives Annie, who it turns out is a spy working for her, the order to murder Frankenstein. Her effort to seduce him was unsuccessful due to the fact that he was solely focused on winning the race. In another part of his speech, the Chairman says that the fact that Frankenstein has lived for such a long time has turned him into a burden, while Perfectus will urge his dedicated devotees to die at his hands.

On Day two of the race, the drivers go through the country's heartland, which is notorious for its gun-toting people. Tammy sends a suicide bomber to murder Minerva's proxy, Chi Wapp. On another road, Frankenstein takes a shortcut, but his automobile becomes stuck in a cornfield. While Annie is away, Frankenstein fights a gang of Resistance ninjas in order to collect extra points. Annie confesses to being a rebel and tries to recruit Frankenstein at the second checkpoint. Frankenstein, who is apolitical, insults both the rebels and the government, repeating his goal to win the race. Minerva explains to Annie at a bar that she is an educated academic who survives by playing a clichéd hip-hop persona. When Annie returns to Frankenstein's chamber, she protects him from Perfectus, who is envious of Frankenstein's fame and sexual attraction. Meanwhile, Hamilton and the Chairman are revealed to be working together behind the scenes.

On Day three of the race, the government will select "authorized" routes for the drivers to use so that they may escape Resistance assaults. As a result of the injuries sustained by Frankenstein's right arm during his battle with Perfectus, Annie assists Frankenstein in shifting gears. Minerva gives pursuit to Tammy, but she is unable to catch her because she is knocked down a cliff in an attempt to dodge Tammy's suicide proxy. Tammy takes pleasure in Minerva's demise, but this is cut short as an ABE comes back, smashes her against the wall, and then blows itself up, bringing both of them to their deaths. While Hamilton and her rebels are wiped out by Frankenstein and Annie, Perfectus is making his way to the finish line by a sneaky back way. Both vehicles continue to jostle for position until Perfectus loses control of his vehicle and slams into the virtual reality control booth. Just before he crosses the finish line, Frankenstein sends a message to his followers in which he suggests that the Chairman himself is worth one thousand points. After Frankenstein has finished off the Chairman, much to the pleasure of the onlookers, he invites them to forgo their virtual reality and begin their very own Death Race. Frankenstein and Annie observe from a distance while the nation devolves into a state of violent anarchy, during which time Frankenstein makes the suggestion that they should repopulate the country when the anarchy has subsided.

How did they make Death Race 2050?

In an interview, an Italian journalist said that The Hunger Games reminded him of the film Death Race 2000. Universal Pictures, the studio behind the current film, was contacted by Corman to reinstate the dark humor from the original. "You did well, but you removed the pedestrian killings and broken-society themes," said Corman.

Corman was in his late 80s when production started during the 2016 presidential election. It depicts the United Corporations of America's current chairman. Corman told an interviewer, "The president does have a hairstyle that resembles Trump's, but I don't want to dwell on it too much since Trump will go and the film will stay."

Is Death Race 2050 a popular film?

"There are a number of Death Races in a movie series about the Death Race coming to an end. After the late 2000s and early 2010s Death Race trilogy starring Jason Statham, Roger Corman returns with Death Race 2050. While both films were enjoyable in their own right, they bore little resemblance to the original 1970s B-movie Death Race 2000. So Corman guides this out-of-control burning disaster back on course, with a three-day race covering a dystopian America, where pedestrian fatalities score up points for out-of-control characters! But with a 50 at the end of the title this time." - YouTuber Decker Shado

The movie came out in the U.S. on DVD and a DVD/Blu-ray combo with three making-of documentaries: The Making of 2050, The Look of 2050, and Cars! So many cars! It came out on March 20, 2017, in the U.K.

Rotten Tomatoes has given the film an 88% approval rating based on eight reviews with an average rating of 6.8/10.

In the words of Chris Alexander, the film is "loud... shrill... spastic... sadistic... stylish... slipshod... stupid... smart. " According to Scott Weinberg, a reviewer for Nerdist, the film is "clunky," "ramshackle," and "kitchy, but that's part of its charm." It has "enough blood, guts, simplistic political commentary, scenery chewing, and terrible special effects to become a cult classic," according to Sebastian of Screen Anarchy.
